Hello!
My name is Zach Wendling, a Lincoln-based reporter focused on policy and politics.
For much of my life, writing and reporting have been another way of communicating and connecting with the world around me. I view journalism as a way to join the lives of those around us, to hear perspectives and ultimately act as a steward for those views.

I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May 2023 with degrees in Journalism and Political Science. My reporting has stretched from Nebraska to Washington, D.C, to Antigua, Guatemala.
In February 2024, I fully joined the Nebraska Examiner, which is under the umbrella of States Newsroom, a group of nonprofit organizations reporting on policy, governance and politics in our respective states. I served as the Examiner's intern throughout 2023.
To all those reading this, I encourage you to get in touch, ask questions and follow our work at the Nebraska Examiner.
Some of my reporting highlights include:
-
Breaking UNL's decision to shutter campus due to COVID-19 in March 2020 and a one-year follow-up project on the impacts on campus.
-
Connecting the importance of the NE-01 congressional race in 2022 and subsequent Nebraska Legislative races financially and socially on politics.
-
Building connections and relationships with the women serving in the Nebraska Legislature for Women in Public Office Day (and later all senators).
-
Following the candidacy and first year in office of the new University of Nebraska president.
-
Leading election 2022 midterm plans for UNL's College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
